Beyond traditional cybersecurity measures, building resilience into 5G networks involves redundancy, diversity, and rapid response capabilities to mitigate the impact of potential disruptions, whether caused by spoofing and jamming attacks, natural disasters, or other unforeseen events. A crucial component of this resilience is the integration of Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) systems. By prioritizing security, PNT integration, and resilience in the design, deployment, and operation of 5G networks, we can ensure the integrity of our critical communications infrastructure and address this urgent national security threat.
MODERATOR: Rear Admiral (Ret.) David Simpson
Rear Admiral (ret.) Simpson is a professor of practice with over thirty years of experience in the operation, procurement and policy of advanced technology products and services. His teaching experience includes MBA-level courses in Leadership and Ethics and MIT/ACIS courses in Cybersecurity for Business Leaders.
Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Professor Simpson served as the Chief of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). He leads a private consulting practice covering the Telecommunications, Defense and Public Safety sectors. His Flag Officer Assignments in the Navy include Senior Procurement Executive and Vice Director of the Defense Information Systems Agency, Director of Navy Networks and CIO/J6 for U.S. and Coalition Forces in Iraq. He served over thirty years in the Navy in technology leadership positions around the world.
PANELIST: Mike Loomis
Mike Loomis is the President of Nokia Federal Solutions, leading Nokia’s engagements with and product investments to meet the needs of the US Federal Government. Mike took this role on August 1 st 2021.
Before taking on the GM position at Nokia Federal, Mike was responsible for Nokia’s webscale segment (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft). This role targeted datacenter infrastructure, data center interconnect and 5G/public cloud partnerships. Mike has held several executive positions within Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent including leading global sales for large enterprises, an original member of Nuage Networks software-defined networking ‘spin-in’ and responsible for technical sales, and CTO of Verizon customer team.
PANELIST: Adam Eldert
Adam Eldert is currently the Public Safety Division Director in the Department of Information Technology for Fairfax County, Virgina. In this role Adam oversees the management of the County’s critical dedicated wireless communications infrastructure, Public Safety Radio System, ensures interoperability with the 23 localities in the National Capital Region, and ultimately leads a team of applications developers supporting the Police and Fire Departments, Sheriff’s Office, Department of Public Safety Communications, and the Department of Emergency Management and Security. Throughout his career, Adam has served in several roles during his tenure with the County including, but not limited to, Public Safety IT Architect, Radio Services Center Supervisor and Branch Manager, Wireless and Radio Solutions Manager, and Communications Technologies Division Manager.
In addition to his professional tenure with the County, Adam is currently an Adjunct Faculty member of the Emergency Medical Services Department of the Northern Virginia Community College, where he has been teaching Emergency Medical Services for 13 years. Adam also was the Fire Chief and an Advanced Life Support provider for his volunteer fire and rescue department where he served for over 11 years.
