On February 13, 2026, the International Association of Fire Fighters, representing more than 360,000 members, filed comments with the FCC highlighting the limitations of GPS indoors and said the “prospect of new technology that can locate fire fighters at ground level and throughout a structure is groundbreaking.”
The association said a solution that offers X, Y, and Z axes would “make our lives less dangerous,” urging the Commission to “investigate this technology,” saying it “should be a top priority for the FCC.”
The following can be attributed to Ed Mortimer, NextNav’s Vice President of Government Affairs:
“We applaud the IAFF for its engagement in this proceeding and look forward to working with them and the broader public safety community to support the first responders who put their lives on the line every day. NextNav has a long history of working with public safety partners to deliver mission-critical vertical location data, and we are confident that our proposal before the FCC is essential to providing fire fighters with accurate indoor and vertical location capabilities in multi-story, GPS-challenged environments.”
