NextNav proudly sponsored the Government, Homeland Security & Defense Summit, a focal point for discussions on the intersection of national security and innovation.

Our leadership team, including CEO Mariam Sorond and COO Sanyogita Shamsunder took center stage, sharing insights into how resilient Positioning, Navigation, and Timing (PNT) solutions are critical for the future of public safety and a more resilient national infrastructure.

Highlights from the Government, Homeland Security & Defense Summit
1. Securing the Future
In her presentation, Mariam underscored the vulnerabilities of GPS and emphasized the importance of NextNav’s terrestrial 3D PNT technology as a crucial complement and backup to GPS.

With NextNav, I have the opportunity to lead a purpose-driven initiative. I am committed to being a part of a solution to solve a possible national crisis. Since our founding – over a decade ago – NextNav has developed technologies that complement and back up GPS. We are a leader in next-generation PNT.”

In addition, Mariam highlighted NextNav’s petition asking the FCC to tweak the rules for use of the lower 900 MHz band spectrum to allow for a terrestrial complement and backup to GPS and to meet the much-needed demand for spectrum to serve 5G broadband.

This plan unleashes spectrum for these critical solutions at no cost to taxpayers with no new legislation needed. And, it is aligned with the NTIA National Spectrum Strategy, which recognizes the need for innovative spectrum use to meet growing demand. This is a step the FCC can take as part of a whole-of-government effort to create a system of systems to back up and complement GPS.”

2. Meeting U.S. Government 5G Security & Resilience Standards
COO Sanyogita Shamsunder participated in a panel moderated by Rear Admiral (Ret.) David Simpson, which brought together experts including Mike Loomis of Nokia and Adam Eldert from Fairfax County, VA Public Safety. The panel stressed the need for collaboration between industry, government, and regulatory bodies to develop robust 5G security standards.

Sanyogita and the panelists emphasized that maintaining connectivity is critical for national security, and a terrestrial complement to GPS is vital for resilience against disruptions. In addition, Eldert shared real-world examples of how PNT systems support first responders, providing accurate location during emergencies.
